PubMed
![]() PubMed is the standard database for biomedical/health literature. It contains articles and literature from 1947 to the present. PubMed indexes more than 5,400 journals of medicine which focus on the areas of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, health care systems, preclinical sciences, and related studies. PubMed is a free resource provided by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).
The Encyclopedia of The Human Brain
![]() The Encyclopedia of the Human Brain is on online compilation of over 200 articles (ranging from 5-30 pages) that discuss the following topics: anatomy, physiology, neuropsychology, clinical neurology, neuropharmacology, evolutionary biology, genetics, and behavioral science. Also included with each article are a definition paragraph, glossary, outline, and suggested readings. This online encyclopedia has also over 1,000 illustrations, most of which are in color.
The Cochrane Library
![]() The Cochrane Library is a database run by the Cochrane Collaboration. The Cochrane Collaboration's aim is to provide the public with reliable information about health and medicine by making available the results of well-conducted medical trials and studies. Their approach is strictly evidence-based medicine, therefore making this resource very important to students of the biomedical sciences. The Cochrane Library is a free resource and relies heavily on the Cochrane Collaboration's collection of systematic reviews.
Gray's Anatomy of the Human Body

ASFA (Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts)
![]() ASFA is an online database hosted by ProQuest that contains and monitors over 5,000 serial publications, conference proceedings, reports, and books all having to do with research for aquatic organisms. This includes the biology and ecology of the living organisms as well as the legal and socioeconomic issues involved in studying them. It is maintained by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. It is a free resource, but not all articles are available in full-text.
Birds of North America
![]() Birds of North America was once a print resource, but is now maintained online by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It is a comprehensive resource for the 716+ species of birds breeding in North America (including Canada and Hawaii). Not only does each history of each bird include text and images, Birds of North America also provides an audio gallery of different birds' calls as well as videos.
The Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior

PrimateLit
![]() PrimateLit is an online resource for Primatology. It is a free resource, but many of the articles are only available if the institution has already purchased them. PrimateLit states that it "provides bibliographic access to the scientific literature on nonhuman primates for the research and educational communities. Coverage of the database spans 1940 to present and includes all publication categories (articles, books, abstracts, technical reports, dissertations, book chapters, etc.) and many subject areas (behavior, colony management, ecology, reproduction, field studies, disease models, veterinary science, psychology, physiology, pharmacology, evolution, taxonomy, developmental and molecular biology, genetics and zoogeography)." It is maintained by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Johns Hopkins Biology Research Guide
![]() An excellent lib-guide compiled for students of biology at Johns Hopkins University. This research guide includes information about different databases available to Biology students and separates them by subject (ie. Animals and Plants and Biomedical resources). It even has tips for searching on PubMed and some of the other more difficult to navigate databases.
ASM Microbe Library
![]() The Microbe Library is maintained by the American Society for Microbiology. It is a collection of images, animations, videos, and protocols for different viruses and infections at the molecular level.
